Lawn Care: Best Time to Water Plants in Hot Weather
Summer is well underway, and many homeowners will be taking care of their gardens. Whether you have potted plants or flower beds, they will need good watering to withstand seasonal droughts. It can be challenging to find the perfect time to water your plants in hot weather, and the pros at Nixa Lawn Service are here to help. In today’s blog, we explain when it’s best to water your plants during the dog days, along with some lawn care tips and tricks.
In the Early Evening
In full sun, most of the water will evaporate before it enters the soil, so you should avoid watering your garden on sunny afternoons. We recommend watering your plants in the early evening for maximum water-efficiency. This approach will give enough time for the water to permeate the soil.
In the Early Morning
If you have too much going on between 5 and 6 p.m., you can opt for the early morning — just start before the sun is shining. Morning watering will allow more water to enter the soil instead of evaporating in the heat. It also gives stems, leaves, and flowers the chance to dry out quickly and will make them less prone to fungal growth.
So, you can water your plants in the early morning or evening. It’s really up to you and it depends on your schedule.
Other Watering Tips
As you water consistently, you may notice that some plants’ leaves wilt during the hot day but look normal the next morning. These leaves are getting enough water. However, leaves that still dangle the following day are either receiving too much water or too little. You can also feel the soil around the plants that you watered the previous evening. If it’s still wet, you overwatered them and should let them dry out. If the soil is dry, water your plants again.
You may need to water container plants each day during heat waves. They tend to lose more water than plants rooted in the ground.
