Although this variety of grass isn’t native to Bermuda, it is found in tropical and sub-tropical areas as well as transition zones. In America, you’ll find it in the southern half of the country. Grey-green in color with short blades and slightly flattened stems, Bermuda is fast-growing and tough. If you want it to thrive, you will need to mow it consistently (always at the correct height), fertilize it regularly, and irrigate it as necessary. In the summer, it can stand up to warm climates and droughts, and in winter, it becomes dormant and turns brown.

Fescue is a cool-season grass grown mainly in the transition zone of the U.S. Able to tolerate both droughts and shade, fescue is desirable because of its hardiness and ever-green color. Unlike some cool-season grasses, it can tolerate the heat in lower parts of the transition zone. “Tall Fescue” is perhaps the most popular variety, with its dense root system and coarse blades, which can withstand a lot of foot traffic.
A cool season grass, Kentucky Bluegrass grows best in the fall, winter, and spring. It is beautifully green in color and creates a thick turf. Although it prefers areas with full sunlight, strong heat will slow its growth. In addition, high temperatures and a lack of soil can increase its risk of disease and weed infiltration, so you will need to monitor its health and provide moisture and nourishment during long and hot summers.
Zoysia is an elegant, finely-textured grass, and many consider it to be the ideal grass type for a residential lawn. A warm season grass, you’ll find zoysia throughout central and southern climates. Dark green and lush, it forms a dense cover of green blades, and it tolerates a variety of temperatures as well as varying amounts of sunlight and water. Although not quite as durable as Bermuda grass, it holds up well under foot traffic and resists disease.
