Landscaping: Planting Fruit Trees and Fruit Plants
In a previous blog post, we talked about the best fruit trees for Missouri. Today, Nixa Lawn Service expands on the topic to cover fruit plants, spring planting tips, and more. With fruit trees, you can enjoy sun-ripened fruit from your own backyard.
In Missouri, you can find many temperate zones fruit plants, such as all types of berries, grapevines, apricots, and currants. Due to different weather and soil requirements, some fruit plants grow better than others. Raspberry plants, for example, prefer cool fall temperatures, while blackberries and grapes are sensitive to spring frosts. We recommend testing the soil before planting. Fruit could be lost if your plant does not receive enough sunlight.

The Best Time to Plant Fruit Trees
Bare-root trees need to be planted in early spring, while the tree is still dormant. These trees have to adjust to the weather and establish their roots, as the roots continue to grow even in the dormant state. In the mild Missouri climate, you can plant bare-root trees from late fall into early spring, before the buds start to break. Container-grown trees should be chosen if you want to plant during another season when the tree is already leafed out.
Quick Planting Tips
When it comes to fruit tree planting, you can either plant potted trees or bare-root trees. To plant a fruit tree, use a shovel to dig a hole in the sunniest area of your yard. Prune off any broken or rotted roots on the bare-root tree. Next, position the tree in the planting hole and spread out the roots. Then backfill the hole with native soil until it is filled. Add a layer of mulch and then water your newly planted tree. Be sure to water consistently throughout the growing season.
If you’re looking to plant a small backyard orchard, you can select fruit tree varieties that ripen at different times for a manageable harvest over many months. This way, you can harvest fruit from May to November. Or, you could choose a single variety of fruit and plant for harvesting from July to November. If this sounds like too much work, the experienced pros at Nixa Lawn Service are always here to help you.
