Homeowners often use baking soda, vinegar, and borax for cooking and cleaning purposes. However, it may surprise you to learn that they have many additional uses. The minerals are weed killers and will keep ants from eating your produce, among other things. Today, Nixa Lawn Service explains more about how you can use each of these chemical compounds in the garden.

Baking soda has many uses in the garden. If weeds have appeared in your driveway or sidewalk, or you’ve noticed a patch of crabgrass on your lawn, baking soda can help. Pour the chemical compound into cracks to kill small weeds and sprinkle it on a wet patch of crabgrass. These unpleasant weeds will be gone in a few days. You can also use baking soda to scrub the dirt off your birdbath, keep slugs away from your soil, and eliminate odors in your compost pile.

As a gardener, you can use vinegar for more than weed control. For example, when you spray vinegar around window and door frames, it will help deter ants. If your garden tools contain rust, try soaking them in undiluted vinegar overnight. Plus, you can preserve fresh cut flowers with two tablespoons of white vinegar and one teaspoon of sugar for every quart of water. Finally, raccoons, rabbits, and household pets can destroy your plants. To ward off animals, sprinkle vinegar in the area or soak a few items in it and place them around the perimeter of your garden.
Borax, a white powder made up of boron, is another great tool for avid gardeners. Small doses of borax can act as a fertilizer that boosts your soil. Borax is a natural ant killer, and it can also kill fungi and weeds. You can create your own ant traps with borax, sugar, and water to make a paste. Spread the mixture on plastic lids and put them around your vegetable garden. Lastly, if you have dirty gardening gloves, soak them in a gallon of water and a ¼ cup of borax to remove stains and unwanted smells.
